Medical treatment certificate under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act

    European Union nationals:

Health insurance cover depends on your residence status in Germany.

If you have recently arrived in Germany from an EU member state, you can usually temporarily continue the health insurance that you had in the country in which you were last insured.
Medical treatment in Germany is possible with the European Health Insurance Card EHIC. However, it is limited to emergency treatment.

You will receive the full range of benefits when you become a member of a German health insurance company. Membership of a health insurance fund is often required by law, for example for salaried employees. In this case, foreigners who do not come from EU member states can also be admitted to a statutory health insurance scheme.

Please contact the advice centres for information on the possibilities for health insurance cover for self-employed people or job-seekers.

Further information on access to the health care system can be found here and here.
